Hel's wedding gown

Back in the spring my friend surprised me with the news that she is getting married! My first reaction was 'I aint making your dress!'. Fast forward couple of weeks, I asked her, if I could see what kind of dress she wanted. Fast forward few more weeks I said finally said yes.

Why was I hesitant? Well, making a gown, a wedding gown, is a lot of work! And I am not comfortable with dressmaking. I know a bit about it, but I always fret that my skills wont be enough. And it's someones THE MOST IMPORTANT dress of all! You do not want to fuck that up!!!

She wanted a modified Mermaid gown or an A-line gown. I suggested we add a short train. Together we decided that we wont be doing any inner construction because a) she was on a budget and b) she wanted to feel as comfortable as possible.

The back was the focal point of the gown. The bride found a lovely silver lace, from which I cut out the appliques. I pieced them together and hand sewed them to tulle with metallic thread.
Once the whole back piece was done, I added a thicker thread to the edge, to give it a nice clean finish.

I think I did a pretty good job. For me it was most important that the bride was happy, of course it didn't hurt that the groom was very pleased as well, and the mother of the bride.

    1. To be honest I was very surprised that she picked that kind of a dress. She usually likes things a bit over the top.
      Thank you Esta :)

  5. Maimu - you are THE BEST! I have always had complete faith in you and your skills so no surprise I was completely extatic about that gown :) I started having "the moment" already in the first fitting with the cotton mock-up dress (before Aunty Maimu yelled at me: "Oh, no no no you are not doing that! You are not going to cry!!!) LOL.
